GeoMentor Spotlight

Each month we'll feature at least one GeoMentor volunteer, learning more about them and the wonderful and enthusiastic talent available in our GeoMentor community to assist K-12 schools with GIS and geography applications for their classrooms. Read about our currently featured member of the community below, or check out previously featured GeoMentors by using the navigation links on the right. If you are interested in being featured, go here for more information.  We are excited to learn more about our GeoMentor community members!

If you aren't a GeoMentor yet, we'd love to have you participate!

  March 2018 GeoMentor Spotlight:

Joseph J. Kerski, Ph.D., GISP; Education Manager, Esri

What was your favorite class in K-12? Geography, Grade 10. Only 1 semester was offered, but I took it and loved the way my teacher carefully pronounced all names as accurately as possible, such as the Sea of Okhotsk.

How did you first learn about and/or use GIS?  As an undergraduate at the University of Colorado, Boulder. I used it in all of my jobs since then—NOAA, US Census Bureau, USGS, Esri.

Name one thing you love about GIS and/or geography: Making our world smarter, healthier, and more sustainable!

Why did you want to volunteer as a GeoMentor? While I like the discipline of geography and the tools in GIS, what I love most is the way it empowers students with real career skills and gives them confidence that they have an important role in our world, and that they can make a positive difference!

What kind of GeoMentor volunteer opportunity and experience are you looking for? Any opportunity wherein I can give hope, confidence, skills.

If someone asked you why they should learn about GIS and/or geography, how would you respond in one sentence? Our world faces complex challenges that increasingly affect our everyday lives, but thinking spatially through Geography and GIS can enable us to understand and solve these challenges, building a better future for us all.
