Call for Papers

What: The First ACM SIGSPATIAL International Workshop on the Use of GIS in Public Health (HealthGIS) 2012
When: November 6, 2012
Where: Redondo Beach, California
Website: http://sysrun.haifa.il.ibm.com/hrl/healthgis2012/index.shtml

OBJECTIVES

Public health and public healthcare are important social issues with deep implications for government administrations and with large effect on individual standards of living. In many countries, healthcare institutions are being pushed to their limit by an aging population and increased urbanization (which may lead to additional health issues such as pollution). Many of these challenges have strong geospatial components. For example, GIS techniques may be used to determine spatial correlates of health. In addition, the ability to detect and record the location history of individuals and groups using cellular phones coupled with the ability to analyze and visually present large amounts of geospatial data can be harnessed to advance health-related applications.

Other notable examples include using geographic information systems and appropriate applications to assist the evacuation of injured people, monitoring the spread of infectious diseases, collecting data for statistical analysis of the effect of pollution on public health, and providing assistance to elderly people with orientation difficulties. These applications necessitate new techniques, systems, and algorithms for effectively utilizing geospatial data in the context of public health.

This workshop will provide a forum for researchers and practitioners to share new ideas and techniques for health-related GIS applications. We invite submission of original research related to all aspects of GIS usages and applications in medical and in healthcare systems. We especially encourage papers based on real-world experience.

TOPICS

Topics of interest for this workshop include but are not limited to the following:

- GIS applications to assist people in need, including disabled and elderly people
- Statistical analysis of environmental or medical spatial information
- Visualization of statistical spatial health-related data
- Privacy and security in location-based health-related systems
- Geographically-based access control for medical systems
- Location-based social networks as a tool to detect the spread of infectious diseases
- Planning evacuation routes for cases of mass disasters or for daily transport of people who need emergent medical treatment
- Using mobile computing and GPS in healthcare
- Management of location-based healthcare services

PAPER SUBMISSION

Submitted papers must not substantially overlap with papers that have been published or that are simultaneously submitted to a journal or a conference with proceedings.

Submitted papers can be of two types:

- Regular Research Papers: these papers should report original research results or significant case studies. They should be at most 10 pages.

- Position Papers: these papers should report novel research directions or identify challenging problems. They should be at most 4 pages.

Manuscripts (both research and position papers) should be submitted in PDF format according to the ACM camera-ready templates available at:

http://www.acm.org/sigs/pubs/proceed/template.html.

Papers must be electronically submitted at the following address:
