Mission Statement for our Conference Theme:

This conference hopes to attract papers, posters, and panel discussions around the broad theme of coasts under a changing climate – or more properly, a look at our coastal communities, coastal ecosystems, and coastal infrastructure with the climate crisis upon us. Five of the six states in our region have coastlines as do the Canadian Maritime provinces. We encourage assessments of vulnerability to climate change, reviews of hazard mitigation planning, efforts of climate change mitigation in the region by cities, towns, and state and provincial governments, climate action and sustainability planning by cities, towns and other government entities, adaptation planning for sea level rise, storm surges, and coastal flooding. Geographers are well-suited to study and contribute to these efforts that all require spatial thinking and the spatial analysis tools that geographers regularly employ. We also encourage presentations that demonstrate good pedagogy on these issues. We encourage presentations that examine the EJ and climate justice ramifications of the climate crisis and COVID-19 crisis within our region. Analyses of these issues in places, regions, or other countries of interest are also welcomed. NESTVAL also welcomes papers and posters on other topics not related to the conference theme. MORE information to come in early July. Please help us spread the word!
