K-12 and Teacher Education
GeoCapabilities - Geocapabilities is an international collaborative project that is preparing geography teachers to become curriculum leaders. The first phase of the project, funded by NSF and led by the AAG from 2011-2013, developed the theoretical framework based on the concepts of human capability, powerful disciplinary knowledge, and curriculum making. The second phase, funded by the EU Comenius Programme, is applying theory and knowledge from phase 1 to create an online teacher training platform (scheduled for release in mid-2016).
Geography for Life: National Geography Standards, Second Edition - The second edition of Geography for Life outlines the geographic perspectives, content knowledge (illustrated by 18 Standards) and skills required for students to become geographically informed persons.
GeoMentors - The AAG-Esri ConnectED GeoMentors Program is working to enhance GIS and geographic learning in US K-12 schools through the introduction of ArcGIS Online into classrooms across the country. Everyone from the broad GIS community is welcome, across all disciplines and sectors, to consider volunteering to help build a nationwide network of GeoMentors to assist schools and teachers with their educational goals using GIS. However, previous experience with ArcGIS Online is not required. Many training resources are available to help GeoMentors create connections with K-12 classrooms.
GeoProgressions - An NSF-funded project to build capacity for learning progressions research based on the U.S. national geography standards. GeoProgressions is part of the National Center for Research in Geography Education's research coordination network.
GeoSTART: Teaching Earth Science - Activities to engage students in modes of spatial thinking. Based on the study of hurricanes, the eight activities include a Teacher's Guide and answer sheets providing engaging activities for the classroom. Funded by NASA.
My Community, Our Earth (MyCOE) - My Community, Our Earth was created in the year 2002 through public and private partnerships, in preparation for the World Summit for Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg, South Africa, to address sustainable development issues, including biodiversity, climate change, poverty eradication, fresh water supply, and urbanization. MyCOE approaches the theme of sustainable development using a geographic perspective that allows innovative responses to local community challenges.
New Advanced Placement course in GIS&T – With the support of a seed grant from the Geography Education National Implementation Project (GENIP), the AAG is developing a formal proposal for a new AP GIS&T course for submission to The College Board in 2016.
Teaching About Global Climate Change - Online professional development modules for geography and social studies teachers preparing to teach about climate change. The modules feature an online quiz, frequently asked questions, examples of how to address common student misconceptions, an interactive resource library, and a teacher-to-teacher forum. Funded by NASA.
Teacher's Guide to Modern Geography - This project produced resources to improve the preparation of teachers (preservice and inservice) to use spatial thinking concepts for geography instruction. Funded by FIPSE in the U.S. Department of Education.
The Geographic Advantage: An AAG Companion Website for Understanding the Changing Planet - A set of 11 online geographic investigations for teaching and learning about research questions posed in the NRC (2010) report, Understanding the Changing Planet: Strategic Directions for the Geographical Sciences.
