Enhancing Diversity, Promoting Inclusion, Broadening Participation
... in the discipline are goals that are central to the AAG and its mission. While the AAG develops and fosters many activities that are focused on diversity, these goals are also integrated in ongoing association functions and actions.
ALIGNED Department Toolkit and Support Project
The AAG's ALIGNED project, a three-year pilot study funded by the NSF, seeks to align the needs of university departments and underrepresented students by drawing upon the intellectual wealth of the discipline to inform and transform ways in which departments envision and realize their own goals to enhance diversity. NSF reviewers called the effort “an innovative and potentially transformative project with substantial merit, a refreshingly creative approach to understanding how we might improve recruitment and retention of underrepresented students in the geoscience- related fields.”

Catalyzing Research on Geographies of Broadening Participation
The National Science Foundation has awarded $100,000 in funding to the AAG to engage scholars in geography and the spatial sciences in a research project designed to organize and inspire the geography and spatial science community to focus its unique disciplinary perspectives and significant scholarly capacity to address how to leverage the intellectual capacity of the discipline to broaden participation in higher education. AAG Diversity Ambassadors
Volunteers share their experiences and give advice about college life, graduate school, job searches, networking, navigating the AAG Annual Conferences, and more to graduate or undergraduate students. Faculty or employers who are looking to implement activities to achieve greater diversity in their programs and workforces, and who wish to converse about ideas and experiences are also welcomed. This informal venue seeks to provide an open forum to share recent success stories, engage in conversations regarding recruiting and retention strategies, understanding student and faculty mentoring needs, improving departmental climate, and other insights from the unique perspectives of the ambassadors.
AAG Diversity Clearinghouse
