Why Attend AAG 2013?

The AAG Annual Meeting is a time for me to recharge and reconnect with my peers from across the country. At the meeting I am able to talk about challenges that are common to us all, and collaborate on new projects that are exciting and challenging. This is a time when I am able to rediscover why I entered the field of Geography and GIS.

The AAG Annual Meeting is the year’s most important research and networking event for academic geographers. Each year, I present research, organize sessions, and attend talks in order to publicize my work, keep abreast of emerging trends in the discipline, and raise the profile of my university’s geography program among the national and international collegiate geography community.

Brian Edward Johnson

Co-Chair, Stand-Alone Geographers Affinity Group

Attending and participating in professional geography conferences allows me to hit my refresh buttons. These are more than opportunities to meet and share ideas with my colleagues. They offer reminders that we got into geography not to follow a 9-5 routine that keeps us filling out forms and attending teacher’s meetings behind four walls, but because we thrive on learning more about our world and how it is changing and on finding solutions to difficult problems. The AAG Annual Meeting – the largest meeting of geographers in the world – offers numerous opportunities to learn about the latest research and discoveries that combine to make our field of study so relevant and exciting and keep us on the cutting edge; that is why I try to attend whenever my schedule allows. When I look at the list of papers, presentations, and field trips, it is often difficult to choose between multiple interesting programs found in the same time slot, as each day offers more than I can absorb. Whether I choose to be more introverted as I observe and learn from my colleagues’ work or if I decide to socialize and share ideas, participation in these meetings benefits my students, my research, and my life.
