The Professional Geographer

Editorial Statement

I would like to thank the AAG executive committee and councillors for entrusting me with the opportunity to serve as the editor of The Professional Geographer for the next four years. I will strive to advance the impact of the journal within and beyond the discipline. Below are some general comments on my goals and objectives for The PG. My goal is to maintain a balanced focus with the overall content reflecting papers advancing empirical and theoretical research. I would like to encourage contributors to write on broader implications of their work, thereby increasing the possibility of engaging a much larger audience in geographic research: academics from various disciplines and nations, as well as representatives from public and private organizations.

Within the above context, I encourage submissions by “new” voices in geography exploring new topics and/or innovative methodologies. I would like to see The PG publish critical reviews and interesting, cutting-edge rapid communications not exceeding 5000 words. A much larger version of these papers can be published in the Annals of the Association of American Geographers or other important outlets for geographic research. I will promote interdisciplinary research and studies spanning more than one specialization in geography. Finally, I will explore the publication of thematic, focused issues that examine the status of the discipline or path-breaking research in a particular area.

The journal’s future as one of the top journals in geography is dependent on our collective effort. I call on you to channel the best quality manuscripts to The PG. I welcome feedback on strategies to ensure that the journal represents the richness of geography.
