Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is CGGE?
A: CGGE stands for Center for Global Geography Education

Q: Who should use CGGE?
A:  CGGE modules are intended for undergraduate courses in geography and related social and environmental sciences.

Q: Why should I use a CGGE module?
A: CGGE modules can be used with students in a variety of ways, all of which can help students learn geography and acquire an international perspective on global issues.  The innovation of CGGE is, through its international comparative approach, to provide students with an intercultural experience, develop openness to learning and a positive orientation to new ideas, and promote sensitivity and respect for personal and cultural differences.   These learning outcomes are relevant to many disciplines, not only geography.

Q: Are the CGGE modules effective?
A: The CGGE Phase 2 modules improve upon materials developed in an earlier, Phase 1 project (2003-2006).   Those early versions were evaluated in classroom trials held in 10 countries, and later revised based on research findings that helped us determine how the modules could be better designed to engage students in meaningful dialogue and help them acquire skills for international comparative analysis.   For details about the results of the CGGE Phase 1 evaluation, please consult this article:

Klein, P., and Solem, M. 2008. Evaluating the impact of international collaboration on geography learning. Journal of Geography in Higher Education, 32(2): 245-267.

Q: I'm not interested in international collaboration. Can I still use a CGGE module with my class?
A:  Yes.   The Conceptual Framework and Case Studies can be assigned as reading material.   Only certain Activities based in the Moodle platform are designed to be taught collaboratively with a class in a different country.

Q: I would like my class to use the modules with another class in a different country. How do I proceed?
A: The CGGE modules feature activities that support international collaboration by connecting geography classes in different countries together in an online learning environment.  To get started, return to the main menu and follow the procedures outlined on the Collaboration page.

Q: What hardware, software, and other materials do I need to use a CGGE module?
A: You just need a web browser with the latest Adobe Shockwave Player installed.

Q: I have a great idea for a case study. Can I submit one for an existing module?
A: Please contact the project director: msolem@aag.org

Q: Who runs CGGE?
A: CGGE is a project led by the Association of American Geographers.   CGGE is supported by geographers, education specialists, and academic organizations in many countries.   Visit the About Us page for more information.
