Nationalism in Indonesia
1979-1997
The United Nations supported a resolution that opposed
Indonesian occupation in East Timor. Several western goverments,
specifically Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States, were
critcized for their support of the Indonesian government. Between 1992
and 1997, the United States sold over $1 billion in arms to Indonesia.
Timorese groups fought against Indonesian forces. Estimated loss of
Timorese life range from 100,000 to 350,000 people - out of a East
Timorese population of about 800,000.
