Pre-1945
The Portuguese colonized East Timor in the 16th
century. The Dutch colonized the remainder of the island of Timor
between the 17th and 19th centuries. During World War II, Australian and
Dutch troops occupied Portuguese Timor to counter Japanese invaders.
