ASIAN GEOGRAPHY-RELATED ORGANIZATIONS
Asian Disaster Reduction Center (ADRC)
The ADRC works to build safe communities and create a society where sustainable development is possible. The organization also establishes international networks through many programs including personnel exchanges in this field.
Clean Air Initiative for Asian Cities (CAI Asia)
CAI Asia promotes and demonstrates innovative ways to improve the air quality of Asian cities through partnerships and information sharing. CAI Asia is a non-binding, multi-stakeholder network of government agencies, NGOs, research institutes, international organizations, and private sector firms.
Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES)
IGES is a strategic policy research institute that deals with global environmental issues. IGES research focuses on sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific, a region experiencing rapid growth in industrial activity and population, with serious implications for the future global environment.
International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT in Asia)
ICIAT conducts socially and environmentally progressive research aimed at reducing hunger and poverty and preserving natural resources in developing countries. CIAT is one of the 15 centers that make up the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).
International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT)
ICRISAT carries out agricultural research and capacity building for sustainable development with a wide array of partners across the globe. ICRISAT belongs to the Alliance of Future Harvest Centers of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).
International Rice Research Institute (IRRI)
IRRI is a nonprofit research and training center established to reduce poverty and hunger, improve the health of rice farmers and consumers and ensure environmental sustainability through collaborative research, partnerships and strengthening of national agricultural research and extension systems.
Network of Aquaculture Centers in Asia Pacific (NACA)
NACA is an intergovernmental organization that promotes rural development through sustainable aquaculture. NACA seeks to improve rural income, increase food production and foreign exchange earnings and to diversify farm production. The ultimate beneficiaries of NACA activities are farmers and rural communities.
SAARC Agricultural Center (SAC)
The SAC focuses on the following activities: establishing a regional information network on agricultural and allied disciplines; identifying and documenting agricultural and pertinent literature including forestry, fisheries, livestock and allied disciplines; serving the agricultural information needs of regional countries; promoting new and better techniques for handling and dissemination of agricultural information; collecting and disseminating information in the area of proven agricultural technologies, effective farm practices as well as introduce new technologies.
South Asia Research Institute for Policy & Development (SARID)
SARIDpromotes sustainable, environmentally sound, and humane economic development strategies for South Asia through research, training and small to intermediate scale projects.
South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC)
SAARC was established in 1985 by the Heads of State or Government of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and works to accelerate the process of economic and social development in these nations.
Stockholm Environment Institute-Asia Centre (SEI-A)
SEI-A works to contribute to the 8th Millennium Development Goal, namely the forging of a global partnership for sustainable development. It is the newest of the six SEI centers, the others being Stockholm, Boston, Tallinn, Oxford, and York.
Tata Energy and Resources Institute (TERI)
TERI was established with the purpose of tackling the problems that mankind is likely to be faced with in the years ahead on account of the gradual depletion of the earth’s finite energy resources which are largely non-renewable, and on account of the existing methods of their use which are polluting. TERI is dedicated to the development of solutions to global problems in the fields of energy, environment and current patterns of development, which are largely unsustainable.
